Psalm 133: Dwelling in Unity

In our fallen world, we're probably more familiar with division than unity. Marriages break down, families divide over money, churches split over disagreements, and we're barely surprised anymore.

Why is division so familiar to us?

We've become desensitised to division because it's everywhere. Dear friend, this is no accident: division, separation, and isolation are the enemy's key schemes, aimed especially at dividing God's people from one another.

God created us to live in unity. It's such a priority to Him that Jesus prays, "that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me" (John 17:21). Jesus wants us to be one in the same way He and the Father are one.

That doesn't mean losing our individuality or agreeing on every detail. This is unity, not uniformity. But it does mean surrendering self-focused mindsets. When I'm consumed with myself, there's little room left to think of anyone else, and that's where division begins.

If self-focus is the start of division, other-focus is the start of unity: uniting ourselves around Christ and His ways, loving and serving one another (Mark 12:29-31).

"Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!" (Psalm 133:1). The Lord calls unity good and pleasant. It's the very atmosphere of heaven, the atmosphere the Father, Son, and Spirit share in every moment.

Dear friend, may we desire this kind of unity, that we might taste that atmosphere of heaven ourselves.
