An Evening Prayer

An Evening Prayer
In peace I will both lie down and sleep;
for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8 (ESV)

David wrote Psalm 4 during a period of real crisis, yet its final note is rest. The peace he describes isn't the peace of a problem-free life; it's the peace of someone who has placed the problem in God's hands.

An Evening Prayer

Lord, the day is done. Thank You for it. Some of it I'm grateful for easily; some of it I'd take back if I could; some of it I simply don't understand. But You were in all of it, working in ways I could see and ways I couldn't. Thank You for that faithfulness. Forgive me for where I fell short today. For the short temper, the distracted mind, the moment I chose self over others. Thank You for Your mercies that are new every morning, I'll need a fresh supply. I release today. The conversations that didn't go well, I release them to You. The tasks still undone, I release them. The worry about tomorrow that's already trying to keep me awake,I release that too. You do not sleep. You don't need me to keep watch through the night on Your behalf. Guard the people I love as they sleep. Be near to anyone who's lying awake in pain or fear tonight. You know each one by name. In this quiet, settle my heart. Let the weight of the day come off my shoulders and land in Your hands. You alone make me dwell in safety. Bring me safely to morning, and let me wake ready to begin again. In Jesus' name. Amen.
