A Prayer for Forgiveness
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9 (ESV)
The 'if' in 1 John 1:9 is not a threat; it's an invitation. God's faithfulness to forgive is not conditional on our worthiness, but on our willingness to bring what's real to Him. The condition is confession, not perfection.
A Prayer for Forgiveness
Father, I need to confess something. I've been carrying the weight of it, and I know that's not what You intended. Thank You for making a way. Thank You for sending Your Son so that there would be nothing between You and me that couldn't be dealt with cleanly and completely. Thank You that Your promise here is not conditional on how bad what I've done is, but simply on whether I'll bring it honestly. Thank You for that mercy. The thing I've done, or didn't do, or said, or thought, or chose, I bring it to You now. Not because I deserve forgiveness. I know I don't. But because You've promised that if I confess, You are faithful to forgive. Help me to receive this fully. I have a tendency to confess and then continue punishing myself, as though I can add something to what Christ has already done. I can't. The cross was enough. I also ask You to give me courage to make it right where that's possible. Forgiven people forgive. Let it begin here. Thank You for Your faithfulness. I don't take it lightly. In Jesus' name. Amen.
