A Prayer for Grief and Loss
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34:18 (ESV)
That God specifically draws near to the brokenhearted is one of Scripture's most tender promises. Jesus, who wept at a friend's grave, is not a distant observer of our grief. He enters it.
A Prayer for Grief and Loss
Father, I'm grieving. I'm not going to try to skip over that or soften it. The loss I'm carrying right now is real, and You know exactly what it is. Thank You for this promise, that You are near to the brokenhearted. Not that You will eventually come near, but that You already are. Near right now. In this. Even in the silence that's settled where someone or something used to be. Thank You too for the gift of grief itself. That sounds strange, but the fact that it hurts this much is evidence of the love that was here. You made us to love, and love leaves marks. I don't want to rush past that. I don't want to carry this alone. So I'm asking You to sit with me in it. Not to fix it yet; just to be present. To be the God who wept at Lazarus's grave even knowing what was about to happen. Hold the people I love who are also grieving. Knit us together rather than allowing loss to isolate us. And in Your own time, Your own gentle way, begin to bring resurrection light into these dark places. Until then, I trust You. In Jesus' name. Amen.
