A Morning Prayer

A Morning Prayer
This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Psalm 118:24 (ESV)

The original context of Psalm 118:24 is the gate of the temple — the writer is standing at the threshold of a holy space, about to enter. Every morning is a threshold. We get to choose what we're entering into and who we're entering with.

A Morning Prayer

Good morning, Lord. I'm here before the day has got its grip on me, and I want to give You the first of it. Thank You for this morning. I'm not guaranteed tomorrow. I'm not owed this day. It's a gift, and You're the Giver. Thank You for the breath in my lungs right now, for the fact that Your mercies arrived fresh again this morning, and for the simple extraordinary fact that I can come to You like this. I don't know yet what this day holds. There may be things coming that will test me, difficult conversations, decisions that aren't obvious, moments when I'll be tempted to handle things in my own strength rather than turning to You. I'm giving You all of that now, before it arrives. Proverbs 16:3 says to commit my work to You, and my plans will be established. So that's what I'm doing. The agenda for today, I'm handing it to You. Not abandoning responsibility, but holding it loosely, with open hands rather than a clenched fist. Fill me with Your Spirit. Let the first words out of my mouth today be kind. Let me be present, to the people around me, to the work in front of me, and to You. This is the day You've made. Let me live in it well. In Jesus' name. Amen.
