A Prayer for a New Day
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22-23 (ESV)
Lamentations is perhaps the most desolate book in the Bible, yet at its centre is this extraordinary declaration of hope. Jeremiah didn't wait until circumstances improved to name God's faithfulness. He named it from the wreckage. That's the kind of faith these words are meant to produce in us.
A Prayer for a New Day
Lord, yesterday is over. Thank You. Thank You that Your love did not cease overnight. That Your mercies didn't get used up, that they arrived again this morning, whether or not I feel them. Jeremiah wrote this from the rubble of a destroyed city, and he still found his footing in Your faithfulness. That's astonishing, and I want to live with that kind of grounded faith. Whatever yesterday held, failure, loss, disappointment, regret, it doesn't determine what You're able to do in today. Your mercies don't carry yesterday's weight. They're new. I receive today with open hands. Whatever it brings, You're already in it. Whatever I face, Your faithfulness is the ground beneath it: not my performance, not my history, not my track record. Yours. Don't let me drag yesterday's heaviness into this morning. Help me to start again, the way only grace makes possible. Great is Your faithfulness. I believe it today. In Jesus' name. Amen.
